Billy Florence instructs, “John Maxwell’s definition of leadership is - leadership is influence. Nothing more. And nothing less.

"My father died a couple of weeks ago and I had the wonderful blessing of being able to speak at his funeral. I thought about all the wonderful things that I watched him accomplish in life. He had an incredible gift of “hard skills” like technology, architecture, engineering and finance. But what I thought about as I was talking to people when they came to the funeral home and different people came up and we talked for hours and everyone of them had a different story of how my father influenced their life.

“They were all different ages. There were older people and younger people and everyone had a story about my dad about something that he had done in their life and they were very specific about it. As I was listening to this, I realized that my Dad was influence without a title. You see, he didn’t influence people because he was their boss It was in living his life everyday that they would tell these stories of things that he had said and done.

“My sister went to the cleaners and the lady at the cleaners came out and said, ‘I miss your Dad so much. I’ve got to tell you a story about your dad. He always came in here and encouraged me. One day he came in here and said, ‘You ought to own this cleaners. You ought to be in business for yourself.’ She said, “You’re dad encouraged me and I own this cleaners today because of the influence of your dad. “

“My father didn’t have a big title. He wasn’t influencing others because he could tell them what to do. He influenced us by the life he lived, his genuine caring, his joy, his faith and being a life long learner.

“So when you think about the purpose of Team, know this. The purpose of Team is to positively influence a million people. I’ve watched the growth and positive influence as it has happed in the lives or Orrin Woodward and Chris Brady and in the learning leaders of the Team Organization.

“To me, Team is an organization that is building a legacy. It is making a difference for people. There is no gap between the words and actions. That’s what our goal. That’s what we say we are. That’s what we are. It is that simple.

“And today, I’m thinking about some people who influenced Orrin, years ago. They helped direct his thinking, lead him to some resources. Pastor Dickie was one of those individuals, but I know through that growth and learning process Orrin increased influence and ability to be of assistance to Chris Brady...And that’s what team is. People influencing other people to grow, learn, change and make a positive difference. “
